Thirsk
Thirsk is a happy hunting ground for many of the big southern stables — although it’s a fair way from Newmarket or Lambourn to the North Yorkshire track, the proximity of the A1 makes long distance travel relatively simple. The track is a left-handed, level oval of 1¼ miles and in sprint races a high draw against the stands is an advantage. One of the high points in the track’s 150 year history was when the St Leger was run here in 1940 on account of the war. Nowadays the Thirsk Hunt Cup is the showcase race of the season.
